Investment in Intercare Extends Mediclinic’s Healthcare Offering

STELLENBOSCH – In a joint statement, Mediclinic Southern Africa (“Mediclinic”) announced an investment in the Intercare group of companies (“Intercare”), majority owned by Novahealth Proprietary Limited (“Novahealth”).

The Intercare group was established in 2002 and currently manages 18 multi-disciplinary medical and dental centres as well as 4 day hospitals and 3 sub-acute and rehabilitation hospitals in South Africa, servicing over 1 million patients per annum. The investment in Intercare comprises of a minority shareholding in the multi-disciplinary medical and dental centres and a controlling shareholding in the day hospitals and sub-acute and rehabilitation hospitals. Intercare will continue to manage all of its facilities under the Intercare brand.

Koert Pretorius, CEO of Mediclinic Southern Africa, commented: “Mediclinic’s vision is to be a more integrated healthcare service provider and Intercare’s broad healthcare offering supports this objective. We believe that this is the ideal opportunity to partner with an experienced and innovative leading role player in the primary healthcare market. The addition of the sub-acute and primary elements to Mediclinic’s healthcare offering will complement the services available through our specialist orientated, multi-disciplinary acute care facilities”.

“Intercare has a clear vision of reinforcing primary healthcare’s essential role within the continuum of care. They have been innovative in the introduction of a number of patient- centred initiatives within the sub-acute and primary care environment, which Mediclinic believes are transforming the quality of care patients are experiencing. This patient centric ethos aligns strongly with Mediclinic’s strategic focus of placing our patients first through maximising value and endeavouring to provide exceptional clinical outcomes.”

Dr Hendrik Hanekom, CEO of the Intercare group, agrees with the potential synergy of a joint offering:

“Over the past 15 years Intercare has developed an integrated business model with medical and dental practitioners and the primary healthcare needs of the patient at its core. At Intercare innovation forms part of our DNA and we are excited about the opportunities that this new business relationship with an international industry leader like Mediclinic will present to our patients, health professionals and employees. Our combined expertise will enable us to grow our network of facilities and services while always striving to improve the value and quality of care we are able to offer our patients”.

Both transactions are subject to a number of conditions, including Competition Commission approval of the Mediclinic acquisition of the controlling shareholding in the day hospital and sub-acute and rehabilitation hospitals owned by Intercare.
